Collection: Royston
The Royston turquoise mining district, located near Tonopah, Nevada, is celebrated as one of America’s oldest and most historically significant sources of high-quality gemstone material. Discovered in 1902 by Lee F. Hand, the district originally comprised four major claims—Bunker Hill, Easter Blue, Oscar Wehrend, and the highly prolific Royal Blue mine. Over time, these operations transitioned from underground tunnel networks into an open-pit operation predominantly managed by the Otteson family, who have overseen the area for generations. What truly sets Royston turquoise apart is its stunning, dynamic color spectrum; a single stone can feature an elegant, fluid transition from vibrant sky blue to deep forest or "military green," layered over a prominent, rich golden-brown matrix. Boasting an exceptional natural hardness of 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, this highly collectible material holds a legendary status among top silversmiths and has long been a staple of masterfully crafted Native American jewelry.
