Collection: Malachites

Malachite is a captivating, vibrant green copper carbonate mineral famous for its striking, marble-like concentric bands and swirling patterns. Deriving its name from the Greek word malache, meaning "mallow," in reference to its resemblance to the green leaves of the mallow plant, this opaque stone owes its rich color palette directly to its high copper content. Formed as a secondary mineral within the oxidation zones of deep copper deposits, its distinctive, undulating green layers reflect the slow, rhythmic ebb and flow of mineralized water over thousands of years. Historically prized as far back as 4000 BC, ancient civilizations like the Egyptians utilized it as a source of copper ore, ground it into eye makeup, and carved it into protective amulets. Though it takes a brilliant, silky polish, malachite is relatively soft and fragile, measuring just 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs hardness scale. Today, it remains highly sought after by lapidaries and jewelers worldwide, serving as an iconic ornamental stone for sculpture, architecture, and statement jewelry.
