Collection: Rhodochrosite
Rhodochrosite is a striking manganese carbonate mineral celebrated for its vibrant pink and deep rose-red hues, a coloration caused by manganese trapped within its crystal lattice. Deriving its name from the Greek words rhodon (rose) and chrosis (coloring), this mineral typically forms in hydrothermal veins of low-temperature ore deposits, frequently alongside silver, copper, and lead. While it rarely appears as transparent, deep red rhombohedral crystals—such as the famous specimens found at the Sweet Home Mine in Colorado—it more commonly occurs in sedimentary or metamorphic cavities as beautifully banded, stalactitic formations. The iconic, cream- and-pink layered patterns found in Colorado—it more commonly occurs in sedimentary or metamorphic cavities as beautifully banded, stalactitic formations. Its a highly coveted ornamental stone for carvings and cabochons. However, because rhodochrosite has a Mohs hardness of only 3.5 to 4 and possesses perfect three- directional cleavage, it is quite fragile and challenging to polish. This limits its mainstream use in high-impact jewelry like rings, though it remains a prized collector's gem and a striking choice for protected pieces like earrings or pendants.
